How Net Run Rate Works in the ILT20 Points Table

Net run rate is the most misunderstood column in the ILT20 points table. It is not just a tiebreaker. It is a live qualification factor that changes after every match and directly determines which teams qualify when two or more franchises finish on equal points.

NRR is calculated by subtracting the runs conceded per over across all matches from the runs scored per over across all matches. A team that consistently wins by large margins while restricting opponents to low totals builds a strong positive NRR that protects them during close qualification races

Teams sometimes deliberately bat deep into their allotted overs after winning a match to score additional runs. A team that wins with three overs remaining but bats on to score 25 extra runs improves their NRR more than one that finishes the chase quickly. This strategy becomes common in the final week when qualification is tight

A heavy defeat can destroy an NRR that took ten matches to build. Losing by 80 runs in one match costs more NRR than winning two matches by 20 runs each can recover. This asymmetry means teams facing elimination sometimes take greater batting risks to minimise losing margins

ILT20 Season 5 Playoff Qualification: What the Top Four Earn
