Dasun Shanaka
Player Information
Dasun Shanaka Player Overview
Dasun Shanaka is a Sri Lankan all-rounder who joins Dubai Capitals for DP World ILT20 Season 5. A powerful right-handed batter and right-arm medium-fast bowler, Shanaka brings extensive international experience, leadership credentials and a game built for the demands of T20 cricket.
Dubai Capitals added Shanaka through the Season 5 Player Auction, strengthening a batting group that also includes Faf du Plessis, Phil Salt, Rovman Powell and Marcus Stoinis.
Playing Style
Shanaka is most dangerous as an attacking middle-order batter. His ability to clear the boundary makes him particularly useful during the final overs, while his experience allows him to adjust his approach according to the match situation.
He also provides right-arm medium-fast bowling. Although his batting has become his more prominent T20 skill, the option of additional seam overs gives his captain greater flexibility when balancing the side.
Which Team Does Dasun Shanaka Play for in ILT20?
Dasun Shanaka plays for Dubai Capitals in DP World ILT20 Season 5. He was one of the international players secured by the Capitals during the Season 5 Player Auction and joins the franchise for the 2026 tournament.
His experience is particularly valuable in a squad containing several powerful T20 batters. Shanaka can be used in the middle or lower middle order, where his boundary-hitting ability provides another option for finishing an innings or accelerating a run chase.
Sri Lanka International Career
Shanaka made his T20 international debut for Sri Lanka against Pakistan in August 2015. He later made his ODI debut against Ireland in June 2016 and entered Test cricket against England at Headingley the same year.
His international career developed across all three formats, but his aggressive batting and additional seam bowling made him especially suited to limited-overs cricket. He went on to become one of Sri Lanka’s most experienced T20 players and a regular member of the national team’s middle order.
Sri Lanka Captain and 2022 Asia Cup Champion
Leadership is an important part of Shanaka’s career. He captained Sri Lanka in limited-overs cricket and led the team to one of its biggest recent achievements at the 2022 Asia Cup in the UAE.
Sri Lanka recovered from losing their opening match to Afghanistan and went on to win the tournament, defeating Pakistan by 23 runs in the final in Dubai. Shanaka’s leadership during that campaign added a major international title to his career and demonstrated his familiarity with high-pressure cricket in UAE conditions.
Power Hitting in T20 Cricket
Shanaka’s reputation in the shortest format has been built around his ability to accelerate rapidly. One of his standout international innings came against India in Pune in January 2023, when he struck an unbeaten 56 from only 22 balls.
The innings included six sixes and helped Sri Lanka reach 206 for 6 before winning the match by 16 runs. Performances of that type show why Shanaka is particularly valuable when a team needs quick runs during the final phase of a T20 innings.
Franchise T20 Experience
Beyond international cricket, Shanaka has built considerable experience across franchise and domestic T20 competitions. His career has included appearances in leagues such as the Indian Premier League, Lanka Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League and other short-format competitions.
Playing in different leagues has required him to adapt to changing batting positions, team combinations and conditions. That experience should be useful in an ILT20 squad containing players from several different international systems.
What Dasun Shanaka Adds to Dubai Capitals
Shanaka gives Dubai Capitals a combination of power, experience and tactical flexibility. Alongside Marcus Stoinis, he provides another all-round option capable of strengthening the batting order while also offering medium-pace overs when required.
His previous leadership experience is another advantage. Even when he is not captaining the side, Shanaka has experience making decisions in high-pressure international matches and can contribute to a dressing room containing both established stars and developing players.
Dasun Shanaka in ILT20 Season 5
DP World ILT20 Season 5 gives Shanaka another opportunity to compete in familiar UAE conditions. His record as an international finisher, former Sri Lanka captain and experienced franchise cricketer makes him one of the more versatile players available to Dubai Capitals.
The Capitals begin their campaign against Abu Dhabi Knight Riders at Dubai International Stadium on 22 November 2026. Shanaka’s ability to accelerate in the middle and death overs could become an important part of Dubai’s batting plans during the tournament.
