Marcus Stoinis Player Overview

Marcus Stoinis is an Australian all-rounder who joins Dubai Capitals for DP World ILT20 Season 5. Known for powerful right-handed batting and useful right-arm medium pace, Stoinis has spent much of his international and franchise career performing roles that demand impact in multiple phases of a T20 match.

Dubai Capitals secured Stoinis before the Season 5 Player Auction, making him one of the franchise’s four pre-auction signings alongside Mustafizur Rahman, Noor Ahmad and Rovman Powell.

Playing Style

Stoinis is best known as a powerful middle-order batter who can accelerate quickly and clear the boundary against both pace and spin. His ability to change gears has allowed teams to use him as a finisher, while his experience higher in the order provides additional flexibility.

He also offers right-arm medium pace and has regularly been used as an additional seam option. That combination gives a T20 captain another way to balance the XI without sacrificing batting depth.

Which Team Does Marcus Stoinis Play for in ILT20?

Marcus Stoinis plays for Dubai Capitals in DP World ILT20 Season 5. He was secured as a pre-auction signing and will return to the ILT20 after a three-year gap.

His arrival gives the Capitals an experienced international all-rounder alongside a squad featuring Faf du Plessis, Phil Salt, Rovman Powell, Dasun Shanaka and Mustafizur Rahman. Stoinis’ ability to contribute in both disciplines provides Dubai with additional options when constructing its overseas combination.

Australia International Career

Stoinis made his senior international debut in 2015 and went on to represent Australia in both ODI and T20I cricket. One of his defining early international performances came against New Zealand at Eden Park in 2017, when he struck an unbeaten 146 from 117 balls while batting at number seven.

He later became an established member of Australia’s limited-overs setup and was part of the Australian squad that won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021. He also featured in Australia’s successful 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup campaign.

Record-Breaking T20 World Cup Innings

One of Stoinis’ most memorable T20 international performances came against Sri Lanka at the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Perth. He reached fifty from only 17 balls, setting the record at the time for the fastest men’s T20I half-century by an Australian.

Stoinis finished unbeaten on 59 from 18 deliveries as Australia chased 158 with 21 balls remaining. The innings highlighted the power-hitting ability that has made him particularly valuable in the final stages of T20 run chases.

Franchise T20 Experience

Stoinis has accumulated extensive experience across major franchise competitions. His career has included the Indian Premier League, Big Bash League, The Hundred, Major League Cricket and SA20, exposing him to different conditions and tactical roles around the world.

In the Big Bash League, he produced an unbeaten 147 from 79 balls for Melbourne Stars against Sydney Sixers in January 2020. The innings established a new benchmark for individual batting performances in the competition at the time.

His IPL career has included spells with several franchises, while his 2020 campaign with Delhi was particularly important as the team reached its first IPL final.

Focus on T20 Cricket

Stoinis retired from ODI cricket in February 2025 after a career spanning 71 matches. The decision allowed him to focus more heavily on T20 cricket while remaining available for Australia’s T20 international side.

That direction is significant for Dubai Capitals because Stoinis enters the ILT20 as a player whose recent career has become increasingly centred on the shortest format. His experience across international and franchise T20 cricket gives the Capitals a player accustomed to different roles and high-pressure situations.

Marcus Stoinis in ILT20 Season 5

Stoinis returns to the ILT20 with Dubai Capitals after three years away from the tournament. His combination of power hitting, medium-pace bowling and extensive franchise experience gives the Capitals another proven all-round option for Season 5.

Dubai Capitals begin their campaign against Abu Dhabi Knight Riders at Dubai International Stadium on 22 November 2026. With Stoinis available as both a batting threat and an additional bowler, his role could provide important balance throughout the Capitals’ 10-match league campaign.
