Matt Potts
Player Information
Matt Potts Player Overview
Matt Potts is an England fast bowler who joins Dubai Capitals for DP World ILT20 Season 5. The Sunderland-born seamer has progressed through Durham’s system to become an England international across multiple formats. While much of his reputation has been built in first-class cricket, Potts also has an established T20 record and arrives in the UAE after an impressive 2026 domestic season.
Bowling Style
Potts is a right-arm fast-medium bowler whose strengths include accuracy, movement and the ability to repeatedly challenge a batter around the stumps. He is known for maintaining pressure across long spells in red-ball cricket, but his domestic T20 record shows that he can adapt those skills to shorter formats.
For Dubai Capitals, Potts provides a right-arm pace option alongside a bowling attack containing left-arm seamers Mustafizur Rahman and Luke Wood as well as Afghanistan wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad.
Which Team Does Matt Potts Play for in ILT20?
Matt Potts plays for Dubai Capitals in DP World ILT20 Season 5. He was signed by the Capitals for US$10,000 during the Season 5 Player Auction. The move gives Potts an opportunity to add ILT20 experience to a career already featuring county cricket, England internationals and domestic T20 competition.
He joins the Capitals as one of 19 auction signings in their 23-player Season 5 squad. Dubai’s pace options also include Mustafizur Rahman, Luke Wood and Mark Adair, giving the franchise several different combinations for the UAE venues.
Durham Career
Potts has a long association with Durham, having joined the county’s pathway at the age of nine before progressing through the academy. He made his senior Durham debut in 2017 and has since developed into one of the club’s leading bowlers.
By September 2026, Potts had taken 376 wickets in 141 matches for Durham across formats and more than 450 wickets during his overall professional career. His first-class record for the county included 273 wickets from 68 matches, demonstrating the consistency that has underpinned his rise to international cricket.
England International Career
Potts made his England Test debut against New Zealand at Lord’s in June 2022 and made an immediate impact, taking seven wickets in the match as England won by five wickets. He finished that three-Test series with 14 wickets, the most by an England bowler in the series.
His performances earned further opportunities at international level, and Potts has represented England in both Test and ODI cricket. His ability to move the ball and maintain disciplined lines has made him a useful option when England have required additional pace-bowling depth.
2026 Season and T20 Form
Potts enters ILT20 Season 5 following a strong 2026 campaign for Durham. He finished the County Championship season with 60 wickets at a bowling average of 18 as Durham won the Division Two title. His performances earned him Durham’s County Championship Player of the Year, Men’s Members’ Player of the Year and Men’s Players’ Player of the Year awards.
His white-ball season was also productive. Potts took 19 wickets during the 2026 Vitality Blast group stage, the most by a Durham bowler. By September 2026, his career record for Durham included 87 T20 wickets, making him the club’s third-highest wicket-taker in the format.
Career-Best Performances
Potts has produced several major bowling performances for Durham. His first-class record includes 9 for 68 against Lancashire in 2024, while he took 8 for 66 against Derbyshire in 2026 as part of another 10-wicket match haul. In T20 cricket, he recorded figures of 5 for 17 against Yorkshire in 2025.
Potts can also contribute with the bat when required. In 2024 he made an unbeaten 149 against Warwickshire, his maiden professional century, after initially going to the crease as a nightwatchman.
Matt Potts in ILT20 Season 5
Potts arrives at Dubai Capitals with recent wicket-taking form and experience across both international and domestic cricket. His right-arm pace provides a useful contrast to the left-arm options in the Capitals attack, while his 2026 T20 performances show that his skill set is not limited to red-ball cricket.
Dubai Capitals begin their Season 5 campaign against Abu Dhabi Knight Riders at Dubai International Stadium on 22 November 2026. The tournament runs until 20 December, giving Potts his first opportunity to make an impact for the Capitals in the ILT20.
