Matthew Tromp Player Overview

Matthew Tromp is a young USA-qualified all-rounder who joins Abu Dhabi Knight Riders for DP World ILT20 Season 5 in 2026. Born on 1 April 2005, Tromp is a right-handed batter who can also bowl right-arm medium-fast pace.

Tromp was born in South Africa and developed through the Gauteng youth cricket system before moving with his family to the United States in 2022. His career has since progressed through Minor League Cricket, Major League Cricket and the Caribbean Premier League, while a productive spell in New Zealand club cricket also played an important role in his development.

Matthew Tromp Playing Style

Tromp is classified as an all-rounder, although his recent professional T20 career has been driven mainly by his batting. He is a right-handed middle-order batter with the ability to accelerate quickly and clear the boundary, while his right-arm medium-fast bowling gives teams an additional option.

His 2026 Major League Cricket performances highlighted that attacking potential. Tromp scored two half-centuries during the season and regularly contributed useful middle-order runs. His ability to score against pace has been an important feature of his developing T20 game.

Which Team Does Matthew Tromp Play for in ILT20?

Matthew Tromp plays for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in ILT20 Season 5. Unlike most of the new names in the ADKR squad, he was not purchased during the October player auction.

Abu Dhabi Knight Riders signed Tromp before the auction alongside Finn Allen and Jason Holder, while Sunil Narine returned to the squad. The official ILT20 announcement therefore lists Tromp as one of ADKR’s four pre-auction players for Season 5.

Matthew Tromp’s South Africa to USA Journey

Tromp’s route into professional cricket began in South Africa. He and his twin brother Joshua represented Gauteng at Under-16 level before the family relocated to the United States in 2022. Matthew then entered the American domestic pathway and represented Houston Hurricanes in Minor League Cricket.

He was selected by Seattle Orcas as an Under-23 player for the inaugural Major League Cricket season in 2023. That opportunity placed him inside a professional franchise environment at a young age, although his later seasons would provide the stronger opportunities to establish himself with the bat.

Development in New Zealand Cricket

An important stage in Tromp’s development came away from American franchise cricket. He spent an extended period playing for Sydenham Cricket Club in Christchurch, competing across T20, one-day and two-day cricket.

The move gave him regular match experience over a full domestic summer. Tromp finished as the leading run-scorer across Christchurch premier cricket and was named the competition’s overall Batsman of the Year. His performances included centuries in important matches and helped Sydenham win two competitions.

That period gave Tromp a broader batting foundation before his breakthrough performances in professional T20 cricket.

Matthew Tromp Major League Cricket Record

Major League Cricket has become the most important professional competition in Tromp’s career so far. Across 18 MLC appearances, he has scored approximately 385 runs from 14 innings at an average close to 30, with two half-centuries and a highest score of 58 not out.

His strike rate of around 150 also reflects the attacking role he has developed. During the 2026 season, Tromp produced innings of 50, 49, 44 and an unbeaten 58, building a run of consistent middle-order contributions.

The 58 not out came from only 28 balls against Texas Super Kings in July 2026. It was one of his most notable performances of the season and earned him Player of the Match recognition.

Matthew Tromp and the Knight Riders

ILT20 Season 5 continues Tromp’s growing connection with the Knight Riders franchise network. He represented Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket during 2026 and later joined Trinbago Knight Riders for the Caribbean Premier League.

Tromp made four CPL appearances for Trinbago in 2026 before being confirmed as an Abu Dhabi Knight Riders pre-auction signing. ADKR therefore becomes the third Knight Riders team in his professional career.

That progression is notable because his move to Abu Dhabi follows directly after his strongest professional batting season to date rather than being based only on youth potential.

Matthew Tromp T20 Career

By October 2026, Tromp had played more than 20 senior T20 matches. His record includes approximately 400 runs, two half-centuries and a highest score of 58 not out.

Although officially an all-rounder, he has bowled very little in Major League Cricket and did not bowl during his 2026 CPL appearances. His recent professional numbers therefore show a player whose batting has become his primary route into franchise teams, with his medium-fast bowling remaining an additional skill rather than a heavily used T20 role.

Why Matthew Tromp Is One of ADKR’s Players to Watch

Tromp’s place in the Season 5 squad is particularly interesting because Abu Dhabi Knight Riders committed to him before the auction. At only 21, he had already progressed from South African youth cricket to the American system, spent a developmental summer in New Zealand and appeared in both MLC and the CPL.

More importantly, 2026 provided evidence of his development as a T20 batter. His unbeaten 58 from 28 balls, two MLC half-centuries and series of middle-order contributions preceded his move from Los Angeles Knight Riders to Trinbago Knight Riders and now Abu Dhabi Knight Riders. Season 5 is therefore the next stage of a career that has quickly expanded across three Knight Riders teams and three major franchise competitions.
