Player Overview

Shimron Hetmyer is a West Indies batter who returns to Desert Vipers for DP World ILT20 Season 5. Born in Guyana on 26 December 1996, he is a left-handed middle-order batter with experience across international and franchise cricket. Desert Vipers retained Hetmyer before the Season 5 player auction, keeping him with the defending champions after he contributed during their title-winning Season 4 campaign.

Career Background

Hetmyer’s international journey began after a successful youth career with West Indies. He captained the West Indies Under-19 team to the ICC Under-19 World Cup title in 2016, the country’s first championship in that competition. He moved into senior international cricket the following year and made his Test and ODI debuts in 2017. His T20I debut followed in 2018. Since then, he has represented West Indies across formats while also building extensive experience in franchise T20 competitions.

Playing Style

Hetmyer is primarily a left-handed middle-order batter. His role in T20 cricket often requires him to increase the scoring rate during the middle and closing overs. His ability to clear the boundary is reflected in his international numbers: by October 2026, he had scored more than 1,700 T20I runs with over 100 sixes. Although Cricket West Indies lists right-arm off-break as his bowling style, batting remains his main role and the current Desert Vipers squad classifies him simply as a Batter.

International Career

Hetmyer has played Test, ODI and T20I cricket for West Indies. His ODI career includes five centuries, while his T20I career has continued into 2026. At the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, he scored 248 runs in seven innings at an average above 40. His tournament included 64 from 36 balls against Scotland and 85 from 34 balls against Zimbabwe. Those performances added to his experience in high-level short-format cricket before the new ILT20 season.

Which Team Does Shimron Hetmyer Play for in ILT20?

Shimron Hetmyer plays for Desert Vipers in the DP World ILT20. Unlike most of the franchise’s Season 5 recruits, he did not need to be bought at the October player auction. The Vipers retained him as a pre-auction signing alongside Andries Gous and Dan Lawrence, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman joined as another pre-auction addition. The decision keeps Hetmyer with the franchise as Desert Vipers defend their first ILT20 championship.

Shimron Hetmyer’s ILT20 Season 4 Record

Hetmyer played seven matches during Desert Vipers’ title-winning Season 4 campaign and scored 111 runs at a strike rate above 160. His most notable innings came in a close chase against Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, when he scored 48 from 25 balls and was named Player of the Match as the Vipers won by two wickets. An injury later ended his campaign early, with Jason Roy coming into the squad as his replacement.

Shimron Hetmyer in ILT20 Season 5

Hetmyer returns to a Desert Vipers squad that begins Season 5 as defending champion. Their opening match is against MI Emirates at Dubai International Stadium on 21 November 2026, a repeat of the previous season’s final. The official ILT20 announcement specifically lists Hetmyer among the established tournament players returning to their Season 4 franchises. As Season 5 has not started yet, no Season 5 runs, averages or strike rates should be added until he has played in the new campaign.
